With an accumulated fortune of 198,255 million euros, the richest families in Spain in 2021 have increased their income by 25,255 million euros, 14.6%. This growth is mainly due to the improvement of the variable income markets and the operations for the sale of shares (OPV) to be listed on the Stock Exchange, highlighting the renewable energy sector. The recovery of the tourism sector from the start of the pandemic is also another factor contributing to this rise, although the current restrictions continue to be a drag.
A total of 44 families exceed the barrier of 1,000 million euros, with a total figure of 163,830 million, which represents 82.6% of the total fortune of the 100 richest clans, according to a study carried out by Forbes magazine.
In this concentration of wealth, the founder of Inditex, Amancio Ortega, has a prominent position, controlling 33.8% of the total with assets of 67 billion euros, increasing his fortune by 10 billion euros compared to the year previous. The Del Pino Calvo-Sotelo family remains in second place in the ranking, with an accumulated total of 8.8 billion euros, 15.8% more. Third on the podium is Sandra Ortega, daughter of Amancio, who has assets of 6.3 billion euros, which represents an increase of 12.5% compared to the previous year.
The group of billionaire lineages is rising strongly, especially in the range between 2,000 and 10,000 million euros. This year there are 15 families in that group, with an average fortune of 3,962 million, compared to 12 last year. They all generate their wealth mainly on the Stock Exchange, except for the marriage of Juan Roig and Hortensia Herrero, the fourth richest family in Spain, with 6,000 million euros, and one of those that revert the most value to society.
Stock placements with IPOs are one of the most used options to increase wealth quickly. In the first half of 2021, there were 1,263 IPOs worldwide for $294 billion (€261 billion), according to Baker and McKenzie calculations.
8. Herráiz, Mahou and Gervás families
Owners of the Mahou San Miguel beer group, they rise from position 10 to 8, with an accumulated fortune of 3,640 million euros, 40% more.
7. Grifol's
The Grifols clan, owners of the Spanish multinational company specializing in the pharmaceutical and hospital sector of the same name, have assets of 4 billion euros, 400 euros less than the previous year. They drop two places in the ranking.
6. Entrecanales Family
The Entrecanales family (Acciona) maintains the same position as in 2020, with a fortune of 4.9 billion euros, 29% more.
5. Daurella
The Daurella clan, owners of Coca-Cola Europacific Partners -the largest independent bottler of Coca-Cola globally-, has made one of the biggest rises in this list, moving from eighth to fifth position, with 5.3 billion euros (+51%).
4. Juan Roig and Hortensia Herrero
The founder and president of Mercadona and his wife, vice president of Mercadona and president of the Foundation that bears his name, have a fortune of 6,000 million euros, 7.7% less.
3. Sandra Ortega Mera
The daughter of the founder of Inditex, Amancio Ortega, accumulates assets of 6.3 billion euros, 12.5% more than in 2020.
2. Pino Calvo-Sotelo Family
With a fortune of 8.8 billion euros, the family of Del Pino Calvo-Sotelo (Ferrovial) is the second richest in Spain. Compared to the previous year, their income increased by 1.2 billion euros.

Amancio Ortega controls 33.8% of the total of the 100 richest families in Spain, with assets of 67 billion euros, 17.5% more.
